Notes for HATTIE A. COULSON:
Pearl Larson's notes: Hattie Coulson, a nurse, left her job and came home to care for her parents as her dad was ill.
Born on the Ed Coulson farm southeast of Erwin, received her first years of schooling in the Jensen School house, 1 1/4 miles from their farm. She moved into Erwin with her parents. She attended high school in Lake Preston, SD. In 1919 the family moved to Sant Cruz, CA where Hattie trained to be a nurse. She did private nursing then went into a Catholic Hospital, St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco, CA, until her Dad's failing health required her to return home and care for her parents. When her father died, Oct 13, 1942 Hattie remained with ailing her mother until her mother's death Jan 25, 1948 and stayed in the Santa Cruz home until she became ill in 1975. The care of a large house and a big yard seemed too much and her residential district was going commercial. She moved into a nice apartment, but missed her home and yard. She returned to South Dakota to recuperate from her illness and visit brother Fred and family in 1971 and 1975. In April 1977 went with a friend to Hawaii. In 1982 came back to Brookings, SD and after breaking a hip, tried many retirement centers around Santa Cruz, but decided to enter one in Brookings. 1986 celebrated her 85th birthday.
Hattie A. Coulson was born on May 23, 1897 in Erwin, SD, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Golseth) Coulson. She died on Sunday, October 31, 1993 at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, SD at the age of 96 years.
Hattie attended grade school in Erwin and was a 1916 graduate of Lake Preston High School. She taught country school for two years in Erwin. She then moved to San Francisco, California where she was employed as a nurse for many years at St. Francis Hospital. She walso worked as a private nurse in Santa Cruz, California until her retirement in the late 1970's. Hattie moved to Brookings in 1982 and has lived here since. Hattie became a resident of the United Retirement Center on April 23, 1982.
Hattie is survived by one sister, Mrs. Edith Dunbar of Laguna Hills, California and nieces, nephews and cousins.
